We must protect mothers when they are at their most vulnerable. Hands must be washed. Immunization must be performed. Water must be safe. Much of the same goes for sanitation. And for schools. Harassment of girls and women in daily situations is a global problem.
Last year our colleagues in UN Women provided some stark numbers: Globally, around 15 million primary school-aged girls are out of school, compared to 10 million boys Women hold only 24 per cent of parliamentary seats The gender pay gap stands at 23 percent And gender-based violence remains a global pandemic In a 2019 study, the World Bank found that women's legal rights are equal to men in only six countries in the world.
But gender concerns should cover every aspect of our work, regardless of scale or perceived importance. And often even very small changes can have a big impact. Gender sensitive infrastructure Being sustainable also means advancing gender equality, and for us, the empowerment of women and girls through projects.
Humanity is running a couple of thousand years late in developing gender-sensitive infrastructure. But having more women in power has changed and will change the pace of progress. Explore further.

The pandemic has also challenged our efforts to achieve gender parity within our workforce. Gender parity remains a key priority for UNOPS. As we speak, women represent 45 per cent of UNOPS personnel, irrespective of contract types.
